Improve Reading skills

Postby cole0008 » Tue Nov 08, 2016 9:23 am

Hi,

I just took PTE roughly 3 weeks ago and I didn't get the result I aimed for in reading. I was just wondering if there are any practice questions for reading section so I can train on that. I aim to score 79+ on reading and now I am at 74.

Regards,
Cong

Hi Cong,

Sorry to hear you didn't get the result you were hoping for. :( When it comes to reading, it really is all about practice (with useful strategies in mind!). In terms of free material, we have a few things available that might help you out.

1. Check out our weekly PTE activities on our blog, there is always a reading question there and we update it every Monday, Wednesday and Friday: https://blog.e2language.com/weekly-pte- ... ctivities/

2. Have a look at our free "fill in the blanks" webinar for a useful method on this reading task: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8--e4jz ... 3G_ptpNiT2

3. We have a number of tips videos or "secrets for success" for the reading tasks on youtube as well, you can find them here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=P ... McMuE3dd_z

I'd also really recommend signing up to one of our courses, because it sounds like you're very close to your goal- and having a good method and strategy for each reading task could really make the difference to your score. Our courses offer webinars for each task, video lessons and practice questions, as well as one-on-one tutorials with PTE experts who can help you pinpoint your personal weaknesses in the reading section and build your skills and confidence in these areas. If you haven't done it already, you can sign up to the free trial of our PTE course here: http://www.e2language.com/home/pte

Good luck, you are so close!!! You can do it.

Sincerely,

Kaia

Hi Kaia,

I am actually a student of E2 language course and thanks to the tips and strategies provided, I was able to achieve desired scores for speaking, writing and listening. Reading is the only skill that I am not too confident. I have done all the exercises in the course on reading but I still feel the need to do alot more. Do you recommend any other sources where I can find reading practice?

Cong

Hi Cong,

First and foremost- have you talked to your E2Language tutor about your difficulties in your followup tutorial? If you book an add-on tutorial with us as part of your package, you can spend your entire session going through sample questions and practicing methods with your tutor. They can help you to identify what to look for, where to look first and so on. They can also give you activities to do in the areas where you're struggling the most with reading.

With that being said, it does sound like you also need more practice getting comfortable with the kinds of texts and questions you're seeing on the PTE. Here are a few resources you can use:

1. Do the fill in the blank exercises on grammarbank.com: http://www.grammarbank.com/vocabulary-f ... blank.html. These are great practice for the "fill-in-the-blanks" reading task.

2. Read the heck out of articles on http://www.sciencedaily.com. Articles on this website use a lot of the academic language you will find in the reading comprehension questions on the PTE. To keep yourself engaged, take notes as you read and summarize the most important points (according to you) when you have finished the article. If you do something like this, you can show your work to your tutor and get feedback regarding whether or not you are identifying the most relevant information (according to the PTE). You can also do this exercise with your peers and compare notes.

3. Try the reading comprehension questions on englishpages.com - for example this one: http://www.myenglishpages.com/site_php_ ... _drain.php. These questions will help you brush up for the multiple-choice reading questions.

4. As I mentioned before, our weekly PTE questions often include reading questions, especially "re-order paragraph", so make sure you keep your eyes open for that (https://blog.e2language.com/weekly-pte- ... ctivities/). You can also do the practice questions on this website: http://www.test-preparation.ca/scramble ... questions/. (Ignore the fact that it's a prep site for high school, it's also useful for ESL re-order paragraph students taking the PTE! :) )

I hope this helps, and please let me know if you have any other questions! Our team is here for you too, don't be afraid to schedule a follow-up tutorial and get help setting up a reading-specific game plan. The reading section is challenging, but you are incredibly close and we'll do everything we can to help you get there!!

Take care, and good luck!!

Hi Kaia,

I was just wondering how much it will cost if I want to book a session with a teacher from E2?

Hi Cong,

For a single session, the cost is 74 USD. You can also upgrade your account to one of our packages, as that will give you multiple sessions and assessments, as well as full webinar access! Do you already have a package with us? If you're a paying member, your session(s) cost will be included in the course cost! :)

Hope this helps!

Could you please help me please?

Hi Anusha,

Thanks so much for the message! I answered you on our blog, but didn't see you scores so I will answer you again here with a bit more detail:

You are very close, however it looks like you could use some substantial help in reading, and then a little support everywhere else. I would highly recommend that you go for our second package (199) so that you can have multiple tutorials with a PTE expert and focus on different areas for improvement. In addition, I think our writing and speaking feedback assessments will be very helpful to you.

Basically, once you sign up, you'll set up a study plan with your tutor that suits your timeline and focuses on your specific weaknesses. In addition to your tutorials, you'll have access to all webinars, video lessons, practice questions, vocabulary & grammar builders and our pronunciation app! There is a lot of material that can help you improve your score in the timeframe you need. And of course, you will have our support whenever you need it!

I hope this helps, please let me know if you need any further information! You can sign up here: http://www.e2language.com/home/pte
